Homophobia was something completely common that no one gave much thought to. The heroes knew that "coming out of the closet" and revealing themselves was a death sentence for them. We also meet Jurek from the interwar Podkowa Leśna, Lulla, the oldest Polish drag queen, lesbian Iza, the daughter of a Viennese Jew. What do they have in common? Certainly exclusion based on sexual orientation and a strong need to fight for fair and equal treatment. However, it was not easy in the times in which they lived. "A Stranger Story" is a definitely engaging novel that shows the human drama. We have the opportunity to hear the voices of those who are forced to remain silent on a daily basis.
