The Great King Yeongjo This is the catalog of the Jangseogak Special Exhibition, “King Yeongjo,” which was held from October 6, 2011 to November 20, 2011. King Yeongjo was a politically iron-willed monarch, but he was also a king who loved learning and culture, and who loved his people. He is evaluated as having promoted reformist politics and demonstrated leadership of harmony during his 52-year reign. Indeed, his era is also called the Renaissance of Joseon. This exhibition is composed of four sections: King Yeongjo’s life, achievements, family, and royal appeals, centered on the Jangseogak materials, a treasure trove of national and royal documents from the Joseon Dynasty. It covers major documents by period, divided into his birth and the world, the era of Prince Yeoning, the era of the crown prince, his reign, and his death and posthumous honors, and selects major materials on his achievements, such as the reorganization of ceremonies and reinforcement of military affairs, and the six major projects, such as Tangpyeong, Gyunyeok, and Juncheon.
