• Description

To your Places!: Single Combat and Duels from Achilles to Serge Lifar: Exhibition Catalog, June 27--November 2, 2025, the State Hermitage Museum The catalogue explores the origins of dueling, the development of dueling weapons, and the place of Russian duels in the context of pan-European history. Although the tradition of dueling—combat as a means of defending honor, conducted according to rules—developed in the 16th century, the exhibition's timeline is much broader. The exhibits presented in the book span the history of dueling in Europe from Antiquity to the early 20th century. Special sections are devoted to dueling in Russia and student duels. The publication is intended for both specialists and the general reader.
