  Women and the Holodomor Genocide: Victims, Eyewitnesses, Causers: Proceedings of the Second Symposium on the 85th Anniversary of the Holodomor Genocide: California State University, Fresno: October 5, 2018 The consequences of the genocides of the twentieth century - the Armenian and the Holocaust - are already well documented, but the Holodomor has become the subject of scientific research only recently. The little-known report, written by Raphael Lemkin in 1953 and preserved in the New York Public Library, was not published until 2008, but it provided researchers with a theoretical basis for analyzing a crime that had been hidden from the public for decades and erased from history textbooks. The authors of the articles in the Symposium on Women and the Holodomor Genocide consider it necessary to study the fate of all segments of society - victims, eyewitnesses and perpetrators - in Soviet Ukraine in the 1930s in order to understand why society was transformed. and how the intensification of violence led to genocide. Two-thirds of the witnesses whose narratives are in the memory books are women, which is why their views on events are central to understanding the violence in a genocidal society.

  Наслідки геноцидів ХХ століття – вірменського та Голокосту – вже добре задокументовано, а от Голодомор став темою наукових досліджень лише нещодавно. Текст маловідомої доповіді, написаний Рафаелем Лемкіним 1953 року та збережений у Нью-Йоркській публічній бібліотеці, було опубліковано лише 2008 року, але саме він надав дослідникам теоретичну базу для аналізу злочину, який протягом десятиліть було приховано від громадськості й викреслено з підручників історії. Автори статей, які увійшли до збірки матеріалів симпозіуму «Жінки та Голодомор-геноцид», вважають за необхідне вивчити долю усіх верств суспільства – жертв, очевидців і призвідців – у радянській Україні в 1930-х роках для того, щоб зрозуміти, чому відбулася трансформація суспільства і як інтенсифікація насильства призвела до геноциду. Дві третини свідків, чиї наративи увійшли до книг пам’яті, – жінки, і саме тому їхній погляд на події є стрижневим для розуміння насильства в суспільстві, яке пережило геноцид.
