Minutes Between Life and Death: The Evolution of Emergency Medical Services (1952–2003) This collective monograph presents the first systematic analysis of the development of emergency medical services in the Czech lands from their nationalization in 1952 through their transformation into regionally funded organizations in 2003. The book aims to map the processes of institutionalization, professionalization, and modernization of prehospital emergency care through an analysis of official discourse and the reflections of key actors. The focus of the analysis lies in the years 1952–2003; however, this development is also situated within a broader “long-term” perspective dating from the late 18th century, with an emphasis on key milestones in the second half of the 20th century and the early 21st century (1952, 1974, 1992, and 2003). In its thematic chapters, the monograph examines the socio-professional identity of emergency response teams, technological and material changes, the transition between prehospital and hospital care, ethical dilemmas associated with encounters with death, as well as gender aspects and pop-cultural representations. Particular attention is paid to the memory perspectives of drivers, nurses, and doctors, whose narratives serve as a source for understanding the transformational processes not only in emergency medicine but also in the broader functioning of socialist and post-socialist healthcare systems.
