In Search of Russian Antiquity: The 'Conservative Turn' and Memory Politics in the Regions of Central Russia (2010s–Early 2022) How did the "conservative turn" of the 2010s reflect on the transformation of historical spaces in ancient Russian cities? Why are certain historical narratives important for regional actors within the context of memory politics? Do local elites manage to tell a story of regional identity and agency, or does its past remain an echo of national history? This book is the result of a study of 12 regional capitals conducted between 2020 and 2022. The author's goal was to "map" the processes of the public use of history and to understand how the historical-symbolic spaces of provincial cities (memorial complexes and institutions, monuments, and museums) are utilized today. The study demonstrates how appealing to the past, on one hand, expresses the foundational values of the Russian nation, while on the other, is used to justify authoritarian models of state governance. In 2025, the first edition of the book was supposed to be published in Russia; however, due to a denunciation by the quasi-Orthodox movement "Sorok Sorokov" (Forty Forties), the printing of the run was halted.
