I Am an Employee of the Federal Penitentiary Service Human rights activist Anna Karetnikova talks about her work as an analyst in the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service in 2016-2022: about the daily life of the pre-trial detention center, about people who found themselves on opposite sides of the bars, about the fight against bureaucracy and indifference. The prison world appears to us as a parallel reality — it reflects the life of Russian society, and everything is subject to strict and sometimes absurd rules. Gradually, both worlds are getting closer: repression is growing, opportunities for human rights work are becoming less and less, and Anna Karetnikova's difficult route leads her to forced emigration. In the spring of 2025, the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation included Anna Karetnikova in the list of "foreign agents".
