Jews in Bjelovar: From Immigration to the Holocaust Since their arrival in the city in the 1870s, the Jews of Bjelovar have largely taken over the commercial and, somewhat later, the founding fathers of the city's industrial base. Their activity was versatile. Just a few decades later, they formed the city's elite (bankers, merchants, industrialists, doctors) and, in connection with this, were co-founders and donors of many Bjelovar societies. In addition, as a separate community, they nurtured their own special customs, religion and culture, and later there was a conflict between those who wanted to assimilate into the Croatian environment and the Zionists who demanded and worked to preserve Jewish identity and establish the state of Israel. There is no doubt that the Jews of Bjelovar were its modernizers in many fields and contributed to its overall development in general. The fate of history intended that their end as a community was tragic. There was no place for them in Nazi-fascist Europe, and this program was taken over by the authorities and the newly created Ustasha Independent State of Croatia. Racial laws, modeled after Nazi Germany, deprived Jews in the Independent State of Croatia of all human rights, including the right to life. Karaula vividly depicts all the "brilliance and tragedy" of the Bjelovar Jews who left their lasting mark on the history of Bjelovar.
