  • Description

Lithuanian Metrica: Book No. 280 (1586, 1589): 66th Court Case Book Lithuanian Metric Book No. 280 consists of the resolutions (decrees) issued by the assessors' and relational, or relational, courts in 1586 and 1589 during the reigns of Stephen Báthory and Sigismund III. The assessors' court (Latin assessores - literally "sitting alongside", i.e. judges of the ruler's court) examined appeal cases of the townspeople of self-governing, i.e. state cities with Magdeburg city rights, regarding the decisions of the 1st instance - the courts of the wai, assessors or benchers. The relational, or relational, court (Latin relatio - report, submission of something for consideration, decision) is a higher level of the appellate instance, this court examined appeals of the townspeople regarding the decisions of the assessors' court, as well as the decisions of the courts of special representatives (commissioners) appointed by the ruler. In the 17th century In the mid-1800s, most of the Magdeburg towns of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania suffered irreparable archival losses, and the decisions of the assessors and the relational court are one of the most important secondary sources, allowing at least partially to compensate for the lost sources of the history of towns of the 16th–17th centuries. The published book is particularly significant for research into the history of the townspeople of Vilnius and Kaunas, because out of 211 documents, more than half are appeal cases of the townspeople of Vilnius and Kaunas.
