• Description

Czech Library 124.1: Czech Dream Dictionary (Dreams of 1979) A two-volume edition of Vaculík’s cult classic *Český snář* (The Czech Dream Book), together with the collection *Komentáře a hlasy k Českému snáři* (Commentaries and Voices on the Czech Dream Book). While the first volume is devoted to *Český snář* as a unique work of art, the second volume serves to provide a framework for a contextualized reading that emphasizes the documentary nature of this diary-style prose. The book is organized into three sections. The first consists of an index of characters and figures in *Český snář* and explanatory notes that seek to bridge the temporal and cultural gap between the author and today’s readers and to decipher for contemporary readers some of the references to the reality of the late 1970s and early 1980s. The second section consists of a critical edition of the anthology *Voices on the Manuscript of Vaculík’s Czech Dream Book*, which summarizes the discussion sparked by the author himself even before the novel’s samizdat publication. The third section then provides a detailed account of the novel’s textual history, a list of its extensive reception, and an overview of previous editions.
