  The collection of studies by Czech and Slovak authors that we present here was created on the basis of contributions presented at a professional seminar dedicated to the thinking of the French historian and art theorist Henri Focillon (1881–1943). The seminar took place on May 4, 2017 at the Department of Philosophy of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. By organizing this seminar and publishing this set of articles, we want to draw attention to the originality of today's rather forgotten Focillon's thinking and to his stimulatingness in relation to contemporary aesthetics and philosophy. The presented set of studies, which draws attention to some of the aspects of formal thinking and feeling that Focillon talks about in connection with art, is complemented by a translation of Focillon's remarkable treatise "Praise of the Hand".
