Work and Land: Small Studies of the Peasant World Summary in English. The monograph in two parts follows different levels of processes. In the first part, a broader picture of the scale in agriculture, in the second part, individual agricultural branches. In the first part, macro-historical processes are in the foreground, and in the second part, the development dynamics of individual agricultural sectors. In the first part, the focus is on the analysis of the long-term economic position of the peasants and agriculture as an industry, the profitability of farms and the peasant part, the perception and understanding of indebtedness, social and economic conflicts in the countryside, the test of peasant rationalism at the time of military scale. In the second part, there follows a descriptive analysis of the moments of restructuring in the production structure on the example of corn production, the dairy industry and viticulture, taking into account the increase in the formal and informal educational level of the peasant population. The monograph thus accurately analyzes the foundations of the development dilemma of economic and social modernization of rural areas, income strategies, social context, perceptions, ideas and practices of economic modernization of agriculture. At the same time, the first historical studies establish a close correlation between the processes of economic and social modernization of serfs and their integration into society as an entrepreneurial class. In this way, it establishes the integrity of the treatment and marks an important contribution to the understanding and involvement of agricultural activities and serfs in the broader flow of Slovenian economic and social history.
