  The Private War of Hugo Vavrečka: A Microhistory From the Interface of Contemporary History (1945-1952) The name of Hugo Vavrečka (1880–1952), journalist, diplomat, director of the company Baťa, Minister of Propaganda and grandfather of the Havel brothers, resonates rather marginally in Czech historiography. He himself has received only sporadic attention so far, and not at all to the last years of his life. At the same time, they are among those that ask the most questions and bring the least expected answers. This book therefore first offers the reader a brief introduction to Vavreček's life until 1945, summarizes the main areas of his activity and shows his life priorities and attitudes, which were fully manifested in the main the examined period 1945–52, when Vavrečka had to – just like other members of the former First Republic and partly protectorate elite – cope with the problems that flowed from his pre-war activities. The author follows in detail Vavreček's adaptation to changing social conditions and his position in them, and even pretends to be a detective looking for the various strategies of dealing and negotiation that he chose when, for example, he faced accusations of collaboration. He is also looking for answers to the questions of what Vavrečka thought about the world around him and how he imagined (not only his) future.
