  • Description

Vartac - My Village: Slovenian Dialect Texts and Drawings of Children from Venice, Resia and the Channel Valley The fifty-fifth book in the Glasovi collection is special because of its youngest collaborators, school-age children, whose products were published in the annual attractive publication Vartac thanks to the Nediža Study Center. From his twenty-eight volumes (1974–2001), 366 folklore or memorial stories were selected and transcribed, written by children from Venice, Resia and the Channel Valley, and occasionally from Gorizia and Trieste. It would be a great pity if the folklore material published in the twenty-eight volumes of Vartac, which reliably testifies to the genuine artistic power of the original verbal art and is ethnologically documentary, was ignored; all the more so because it also directly intercepts the exceptional conditions after the devastating earthquake in Friuli and the Julian region in 1976. The genre arrangement of the material by sections is standard, opened by poems modeled on ancient Jewish haggads. Unlike other books in the collection, this book does not end with humorous tales. It concludes with the section My Village, the theme of which is related to everyday reality, which is even more cruel today with the emptied villages than at the time of the creation of essays on home places.
