Description
- The Rise and Fall of the Czechoslovak People's Army? The Military Profession in the Collective Memory of the Officer Corps (1960–1970) There are a number of stereotypes surrounding the military profession and the functioning of the army during the communist regime. The army is generally perceived as an obedient tool of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, ready to turn against its own citizens and carry out the Soviet Union’s aggressive plans during the ongoing Cold War. Professional soldiers, in turn, are often portrayed primarily as blind communists mindlessly carrying out senseless orders. Last but not least, the pre-November army is often regarded as a useless and ineffective institution in which entire generations of young men wasted their time and potential during mandatory basic military service. The aim of this book is not to refute the above claims one by one, but rather to put them into perspective—that is, to show the officers of the Czechoslovak People’s Army in a slightly different light—as practitioners of a specific profession that had its own historical, professional, and cultural characteristics. The book reflects on the everyday lives of Czechoslovak People’s Army officers in the 1960s, drawing primarily on interviews with eyewitnesses. It attempts to (re)construct the mechanisms underlying the socio-professional identity of career soldiers, which was significantly influenced by the occupation of Czechoslovakia in August 1968 and the subsequent “normalization” of the army.
- K vojenské profesi a fungování armády v období komunistického režimu se vztahuje celá řada stereotypů. Armáda je zpravidla vnímána jako poslušný nástroj KSČ připravený vystoupit proti vlastním občanům a plnit agresivní plány Sovětského svazu v probíhající studené válce. Vojáci z povolání pak bývají líčeni převážně jako zaslepení komunisté bezmyšlenkovitě plnící nesmyslné rozkazy. V neposlední řadě bývá předlistopadová armáda považována za zbytečnou a neefektivní instituci, v níž mařily v rámci povinné základní vojenské služby svůj čas a potenciál celé generace mladých mužů.
