Description
- Great Yo-Kai Exhibition: From Eery to Endearing: Yokai in the Arts of Japan Catalog an exhibition held at Tōkyō-to Edo Tōkyō Hakubutsukan, July 5-August 28, 2016, and Abeno Harukasu Bijutsukan, September 10-November 6, 2016. This exhibition introduces yokai, which have been so beloved by the Japanese since ancient times, and explores their development as "manifestations of our anxiety toward the spirit world" through a range of masterpieces of Japanese art including many National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. Works range from Jomon-period clay figurines to Heian- and Kamakura-period pictures of Hell and Muromachi-period illustrated handscrolls, Edo-period ukiyo-e, and even the present-day YO-KAI WATCH anime series. In a departure from conventional yokai exhibitions that until now have often placed a heavy emphasis on folklore studies, the current exhibition offers an art historical perspective on the fascinating world of yokai.
