  Psychiatric hospital as a total institution: a sociological case study This work is an example of a successful blend of sociological theories and empirical research, inspired by Goffman's concept of total institutions. The author employs observation and interview methods for personal analysis, utilizing existing data. Through participant observation, he assumes the patient's social role and perspective. The work consists of a theoretical section on methodology, considerations of institutions and organizations, and a reconstruction of Goffman's concept of total institutions. The theoretical section is supplemented by an engaging historical perspective on the origins and development of psychiatric hospitals, including in Poland. The core of the work is a descriptive and explanatory theory of the psychiatric hospital, drawing on E. Goffman's analytical method.
