• Description

Maramzin occupies a unique place among contemporary Russian writers. He was born in 1934 and started writing in the mid-1950s, joining a lively group of young Leningraders encouraged by the relatively free atmosphere of Khrushchev’s “thaw”. Presently, Maramzin lives and writes in France. According to the critic Lev Losev, bewilderment is one of the most important components of Maramzin’s prose, an integral part of his intonation – it is the reaction of a person who refuses to let things go by default and looks at the world with a healthy amount of naïveté – the approach typical of Andrey Platonov. In Maramzin’s case this bewilderment very often gives birth to satire. His sharp eye for everyday detail and his discerning ear for nuances of Russian speech (a challenge for translators!) ensure that some of the stories of Vadim’s childhood, youth, early career, life in Paris and his attempts to become famous in the new post-Soviet Russia ¬¬– are extremely funny.
