• Description

Jews in Latgale The author draws attention to the fact that Latgalian villages were visited by Jewish artisans who were in demand. These were tailors, glaziers, photographers, saddlers, stove-makers, etc. The author's observations are interesting: what the peddlers looked like, the time of visits, the price of goods and services, the process of trade is described. The reasons for the rise and fall of such trade are traced. It is important how communication took place between Latgalian peasants and Jewish peddlers. It was a dialogue of two different cultures, as a result of which one side got to know the other. Jews were those who reported city news, delivered mail, medicine. They, as a rule, communicated in Latgalian and Latvian, some estate owners understood Yiddish.
