Baroque Sculpture in Northern Croatia "Speaking of Baroque in northern Croatia, we are referring to the historically conditioned artistic expression of our environment in the 17th and 18th centuries as a result of the creative adoption and processing of artistic impulses that arrived from neighboring countries, as well as the specific profile of this style in our area. From its homeland of Italy, Baroque, accompanied by the Counter-Reformation, penetrated north into almost all European countries and became a pan-European style, whose abundance of expressive possibilities everywhere encouraged an extraordinary flourishing of artistic activity. Baroque flourished in particularly diverse forms and rich nuances in the countries of Central Europe, among which those in the Alpine region merged into a unique cultural and artistic world with a strong centuries-old tradition of wood carving. Artistic influences from that area penetrated the historically and administratively connected northern Croatia, reaching fertile soil there. Stylistic impulses from Central European artistic centers soon merged with the domestic environment and, adapting increasingly to its conditions, began to transform themselves in a specific way. Thus, Baroque art in all its manifestations soon became a general means of expression and penetrated all the way to folk art, where it remained strongly and longest.
